— FLACO JlMlNEZ
The hot south ol the US has the rich heritage ol black blues, white country and Texas swing and a Mexican based dance music, the sound 01 Flaco Jiminez (see photo). He’s the leading exponent, an accordionlst like no other, unashamedly up there with the electric guitars and saxes, squeezing the lite out at his little box. As with zydeco and caiun, the sound oi the tree reed instrument is indispensible to Tex Mex, and the band he brings with him to Edinburgh 16th and Glasgow 18th has the eiiect oi a bottle oi tequila downed in one. Does anyone remember Clilt Aungier? He's on vocals and guitar; Johnny Pugh, sax
and vocals; Bobby Clouser and Marty David, drums and bass. The Glasgow event has Tex Mex eats and drinks on after and both gigs will be packed. lie
Pete Rowan but he also plays in Ry Cooder's Chicken Skin Band and has his own group back home. Last year Flaco was presented with the Grammy award as leading American ethnic musician. Like San Antonio, which is home lor Place and his music, the
