LULU
Although it opened some three weelrs ago, Scottish Opera's new co-production with Opera North of Berg's l.qu still has two performances to run in Glasgow’s Theatre Royal. The story is oi Lulu, the femme latale, who is finally driven to prostitution and ' meets death at the hands of Jaclr the Rippper. Left uncompleted, but with most of Act 3 stretched out, as Berg neared his own death, Lulu had to wait until 1979 fora lull reconstruction by Friedrich Cerha: it is this version Scottish Opera are giving audiences the chance to see for the first time in the UK outside London. For that reason alone it is well worth going to see Lulu, but don’t loolr for an easy time of it. - Almost four hours long, with a complex plot, Berg’s score moves between lusciousness and fragmented, sparse atonality. Dramatic though the music is, there is something rather one dimensional about this production which doesn’t complement that drama to the full. ‘I’he American soprano Beverly Morgan is the perfect combination of being visually right for the part with a remarkably agile voice, but her Lulu doesn't have the gutsy sexiness the role calls for, although, admittedly that aspect can be all too easily overdone. Dramatic tension is lost too simply through flat, wooden acting by some of the male characters. Even though Lulu is sung in English,
