For a Sikh Glaswegian playwright like Gurmeet Mattu a title such as ‘Cowboys and indians’ has a special piquancy. It was his starting point for his new play, specially commissioned from Tag Theatre Company and will be his first professional production.
‘My brief for the play was to tackle racism in Glasgow, but I don't go in for heavy stuff, I'd rather make people laugh and get the message across that way’ says Gurmeet.

With ‘Cowboys and Indians’, which has a multl-racial cast, he will be sticking to the old dictum of writing about what you know. It concerns a corner shop in Glasgow, 3 business his own family was in, and is rich in local character including a busybody called Agnes and a mysterious American.
Alter ‘Cowboys and Indians’ he will be tackling a completely new subject in his next play. Missiah. Itwill be performed by Houghcast Theatre at the Drama Centre in Glasgow next year and is his first non-comedy. ‘lt’s vaguely feminist,’ says Mattu, ‘about a sort of female Jesus set in the present.’ (Sally Kinnes)
