Kingfisher Gallery, Edinburgh It is Janice Cairn's paintings which draw you to them more than any other in this exhibition oi Eight Artists from the North East of Scotland, together with work by the sculptor, David Cregeen. There is something about her complex patternings and elaborate broken colour which probes her subject’s faces in a mesmirising and unsettling way.
She spares nothing in her inquiry. The face in the painting ‘Sailor from the Schleswig Hostein’ appears straight on, in profile and upside down at different points in the picture like a

head being spun in a washing machine.
Her mood is often mystical and ‘On the Bridge of the Stirling Teal’, which shows a girl with a bird coiled in her belly and another looped through the space of her breast, is downright haunting. The girl looks simultaneously like all women and one woman in particular, the sort of lace

you catch on a train and which then worries at the memory for a long while after. Elsewhere she is more winsome as in ‘The Memory Throws Up High and Dry a Crowd of Twisted Things’. A huge face of girl dominates the picture while a naked girl stands in the foreground to one side, though who is remembering who is not entirely clear.
This is an exhibition linked by localih but not by theme and all the works included show artists with very different concerns. Ian Howard (see il'lus) is well represented with semi-abstract pictures where familiar looking almost arbilary forms, like his oft-repeated conical witches' hat, crowd the space. His striking picture ‘Collection’ is rather different however gathering together on a table paper cut-outs of fruit to make an interesting still life with a quasi-baroque feeling for the richness of surfaces and objects.
