‘We're doing it because we think a theatre company is not a theatre company it it’s only doing one production a year. We ought to be doing more. We ought to be doing more new work,’ says Allan Sharpe, tlrmly, at Theatre Co-Dperative's selt-linanced venture to open Edinburgh’s Wilkie House up as a venue and present new plays there.
Theatre Co-Dperative, oi which Sharpe is a joint artistic director, were most recently seen in their production oi ‘Wallace' by Patrick Evans, which toured the length and breadth ol Scotland. This latest move constitutes a new departure Iorthe company in several senses— seeking more continuity oi venue, a more diverse range oi writers and a more varied use oI style, breaking away trom their previous minimal presentations.
This tirst season at three plays was put together with the help at playwright Tom McGrath, who, as Literary Director at the Royal Lyceum, spends much of his time sitting behind a huge pile of scripts at new plays all waiting to be performed. ‘He helped us a great deal in choosing the scripts and has been instrumental ln persuading the authors that it would be alright,’ says Sharpe. The authors, Ann Downie, Alisdair Campsle and John Cllllord have all agreed to be part otthe profit-share basis on which the whole operation will be run. The company has received no grants or linanclal aid to start the season, but is relying on what is already in the bank balance, box otiice returns and the goodwill oi the Edinburgh University Settlement, who own Wilkie House and who have let it to the company at reduced rates.

Ann Downle's ‘Jelly Babies’, the llrst oI the three, deals with abortion and is set in a gynaecological ward; Alisdalr Campsie’s ‘ilenry Dundas 0r Howl Murdered Robert Burns’ was In tact given a reading at Tom McGrath's “Words Beyond Words’ series during the Edinburgh Festival this year, and suggests that a Iormer Edinburgh dignitary was involved in a conspiracy to remove the troublesomely outspoken Burns; John Cliitord's ‘iiow Like An Angel’ is set in a mental hospital and is concerned with male behaviour and violence, and should show the writer of the successiul ‘Losing Venice’ and ‘Playlng With Fire’ (both show at the Traverse in recent years) In a very different mode.
