ROCK
RIDAY 18 Glasgow
0 Goodbye Mr Mackenzie Boulevard Hotel, 1710 Great Western Road, Duntocher, 377 2381. 10pm. Hard to believe that it is over a year since The Rattler entered the shops — and the indie charts. It was a great record, but their live shows never really matched the excitement or energy contained on the 7 inches of plastic. Worth seeing to see how much they have developed in the year.
0 Johnny Logan (to be confirmed), Pavilion Theatre, Renfield Street, 332 1846. 7.30pm. Far too easy a target for some venomous prose. I will be the one in the front row shouting for that classic Eurovision winner ‘What’s Another Year?’
0 The Lucy Show Rooftops, 92 Sauchiehall Street, 332 5883. 10.30pm. Friday night at Rooftops is all about goths and gothdom. None of the audience admit that they are goths, none of the bands admit that they are goths. Sadly, they all are, and the music is usually suitably regressive.
0 We Free Kings/Bop Sh’Bam Stirling
University, Stirling. Double bill that should be worth seeing. The We Free Kings album should be out in the not too distant future, and Bop Sh'Bam feature the Questions’ one time guitarist/songwriter, John Robinson.
0 Loose But Tight Maltings Park Hotel, Duntocher. 9pm. Competent local band.
0 George McGowan Trio and Linda Fletcher Blackfriars, Bell Street. 9pm. Free. Residency.
0 Jamie Barnes and Cochise Platini’s at Furiongs, 115 West Nile Street, 332 5777. 9pm. Free. Residency.
0 Hindsight Tin Pan Alley, Mitchell Street. CANCELLED. Appearance postponed, as the band are working on the final stages of their debut album for the Circa label. Ifyou can’t see them, may I suggest their single, Low Down — a respectable version of the 802 Scaggs song, from 1976.
Edinburgh
0 Salvation The Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. 7.30pm. High turnout predicted for this Leeds group with strong Sisters of Mercy connections. Andrew Eldritch produced their first two singles and Wayne Hussey produced the current one, ‘The Shining’. Come on, you just know what they’re going to sound like.
0 The Thanes and 0 Vatican Shotgun Scare Blues Basement, Broughton Street, 556 7147. 9pm. £1. Scotland’s finest exponents of 605-style garage rock, after driving a couple of thousand punters apewire at a garage festival in the Netherlands. Vatican Shotgun Scare have a neat way with snappy titles, especially the ones concerning other members of the local music fraternity.
0 The Heaters Lord Darnley, West Port, 229 4341. 10pm. Free. Bluesy. 0 Wasted Days Rolling Stone, Greenside Place, 558 1270. 9.30pm. Appearance depends on availability ofvenue.
o Liza Scott and East Coast Rock Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 2263816. £1 after9.30pm. A daunder through some rock and country-rock classics.
0 Wake The Dead Clowns, High Street, 556 1830. 9pm. Free.
0 Rikki Peebles and Hard Corp The Amphitheatre, Lothian Road], 229 7670. 10pm—4am. £3.50. Half-price before 11pm. Dress fairly smart. Eurovision singer makes personal appearance, supported by Eurythmics-styie pop of Hard Corps.
SATURDAY 19 Glasgow
0 The Crows Boulevard Hotel, Great Western Road, Duntocher. 10pm. For a longtime The Crows seemed to want to be a Scottish version of the Cult. Hopefully they have grown out ofthat to fulfil the potential that they had a year or so ago.
0 Motorhead Queen Margaret Union, University Gardens, 339 9784. ‘Scotland’s number one pop writer’ reckons that Bad News are the future of Rock and Roll. What he forgets is that Bad News are
