MARTIN TAYLOR
He had flown back that morning from the States but Martin Taylor was bright and enthusiastic about the new album. ‘We recorded it in LA and I've just finished the mixing in Nashville. ltwill probably be called Cherokee Ride, after a piece I wrote, and it's aimed at a younger audience. Really good music— the trumpet player is from the Crusaders and the percussionist from Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson. John Pattatucci plays bass in Chick Corea's band, Mike Wariord is the tenor player and Ralph Humphries on drums. I hope to tourthe band, orone with more or less the same line-up, when the album comes out.’
Taylor’s astonishing technique on guitar is married to a wide musical taste that keeps him much in demand as a world performer, flying out of his native Scotland every few weeks. He regularly tours as Stephane Grappelll’s guitarist. Last week he joined the fiddler on stage in the States in an

unplanned meeting and he has even been seen singing to Grappelli‘s piano playing! ln QctoberTaylor plays London with the guitarist Charlie Byrd and in April goes back to the States to record an album with Chet Atkins. ‘Everybody knows his country stuff but I heard an album he made with Lenny Breau . . . I love what I heard . . . great jazz guitar.’
Martin Taylor plays Glasgow (Gillespie’s, 20 Sept) in a solo concert, usually three sets starting with some standards, then more modern and unusual numbers and even throwing in a folk song ortwo as a starting point for complex improvisations, playing all the lines at once but always with more depth than flashy brilliance. He is lulsome in his praise oi the new-look Gillespie's with it's more modern, adventurous booking policy and thinks ‘Elliot Meadows is doing a marvellous iob,’ and laughs, ‘I hope they can keep paying his lee.‘ (Norman Chalmers)
