THE CROFTERS’ BARD
‘I never thought I’d see the day when I’d settle on the mainland.’ Catharine-Ann MacPhee shakes her head, still looking startled. A diiiident, Iiltingly-spoken native ol Barra — ‘where everybody sings’ — she seems more nervous over being interviewed than about taking the lead role in 7:84’s latest production, Mairi Mhor: the Woman lrom Skye, the story oi one oi the greatest 19th-century Gaelic songwriters. Thrust onto the church-hall stage irom the age oi Iour, along with any others old enough to stand unsupported, and expected to sing tor a Iond but critical audience, pertormlng in public— in Gaelic, that is— has never been a hurdle lor this increasingly acclaimed young singer and actress. Training straight Irom school with the Gaelic Theatre Company, she worked with them until their collapse, three and a hall years later when lunds were withdrawn. Within weeks, John McGrath, artistic director and playwright Ior 7:84 ‘The Scottish People's Theatre’, was on her trail, Ilrst phoning, and llnaily cornering her In Mull. ‘The thought oi pertormlng in English— it was like speaking a Ioreign language. . . butl couldn't reiuse aiter he'd come all that way. . .’ The part she plays as Mairi, ‘bard oi the Highland land league’, who joined the protest against the croiters’ land losses, is In line with McGrath's earlier works, both ‘hlghly political' and relevant still to ‘ordlnary people' today. Set In a modern plastic larmhouse cats on Skye, Mairl Mhor Is a blend ol comedy,

monologue, song and music, Malrl’s outraged ghost rising atthe waitresses’ Country and Western yodelling, and demanding that her own tale be told — and properly.
Clearly a coveted member oi the company, Catharine-Ann remains unremarkany untainted by success, thinking little at having her first record - Canan Na Gaidhail (The Language of the Gael)— released in October, or oi McCrth asking herto join 7:84 in Channel Four’s Hogmanay this December. While McGrath’s back is turned she leans iorward and nods towards my notepad. ‘Actually, I always wanted to be a journalist,’ she conildes, schoolgirlish awe in her voice, as though it’s not quite obvious which oi us is hitting the heights.
