It is no secret that Scottish Television have been looking for a new light entertainment tormat with which to hit not just Scottish audiences but to mount an assault on the network. This could be the programme —certainly it boasts a wealth oi talent (much at it new to television) drawn from the Scottish theatre and music circuits. begins a new season of Music Weekly on 3 with a special edition called Glasgow—City oiChange. R3. Sun 20. 10.30am and it focuses on its classical music life — the SNO. the Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Scottish Opera and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Future plans inlcude the ‘scratch‘ orchestra. busking and electro—acoustic music.
Russell Harty makes a welcome takeover from Richard Baker to present the troubled programme Startthe Week from Mon 21. R4. Russell Harty cut his radio teeth as the original presenter of Mid Week which in its time was the best of R4’s chat shows and he will need all his skills to revive $18“ the Week which has lost its way even before the dismissing of Kenneth Robinson.
R4‘s Saturday night theatre isn‘t known for its innovative writers. but Fancy Man. R4. Sat 19. 7pm. by Mike Stott, whose play Dead Men was presented by Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre a couple of years ago. may lend a different tone. Death — as is usual in this slot — gets a good airing. this time. gruesomely. in the form of a suicide pact by a young married couple.
R4‘s ever-excellent Kaleidoscope turns its attention to the Edinburgh Festival Chorus which enjoys a reputation for musicianship ofthe highest standard. Robert Dawson Scott — The List‘s own columnist. presenter of Radio Scotland‘s Tuesday Review and Scottish theatre critic of The Times — follows the chorus from rehearsal to performance.
