THEATRE RACOON
Fora small, new, unfunded theatre company to put on a play by a little-known Polish playwright might sound like financial suicide — but Theatre Racoon are risk-takers by instinct. The first play in their recently started series of productions was ‘Hess' — about Rudolph Hess and performed before he died. Mid-way through one performance they were rudely interrupted by a threatening bunch of infiltrators from the ‘British National Party'. The show went on. Their new production is ‘The Prophets', a comedy by Slawomir Mrozek, a Polish journalist and cartoonist. DirectorAdam Fresco describes it as ‘a political satire on how we are spoken at or to by the powers that be.“ Set in what Fresco calls a ‘Marx Brothers type land’ the play largely concerns a pompous regent and his incompetent sidekick bailiff and was first performed in the late sixties. Theatre Racoon’s version is updated and adapted slightly to be accessible to the modern British audience, as Fresco explains: ‘the regent becomes a woman called MT, and the three wise
men in the play, who are really a Mickey-take of intellectualism, become an American evangelist, a YTS on a scheme to be a wiseperson and a mad professor.‘
Though several of their productions to date have been political satires, Fresco, a founder member of the Glasgow-based company, feels that their political commitment lies more in the company’s structure and style than in the content of their shows. ‘We are non profit-making and we try to keep ticket prices as low as possible. We also try to strip shows bare of set and costumes-we want to put the actor back on stage.‘ (S.H.)
