Explaining all that goes on to log. label. collect. conserve. research and encase an object in a museum. The Interior of the First Hunterian Musuem with Statue of James Watt by William Stewart (1823—1906). The painting makes reference to a modest incident which partially led Watt on to his revolutionary invention of the steam engine. As he was Mathematical Instrument Maker to Glasgow University at the time. 1757. its recent purchase by the museum is not entirely inappropriate.

Denis Masi Sat 8 Aug—Sun 68ept. Installations like theatre sets incorporate sound. light and smell into their refined image. Born in America in 1942 Masihas lived and worked in London since 1967. This major exhibition comprises two new works Prompt the last ofa series of8 constructions begun in 1979 and Shrine. the result of Masi's experience as Artist—in—Residence at the Imperial War Museum. Related drawings and photographs will be included.
Weegee Sun 8 Aug—Wed 9 Sept. When great fires broke out in the city ofNew York Weegee was always one of the first to arrive. Ilis photographs capture starkly and with 40‘s black and white the dark but exciting face of NYC. A cafe exhibition. Mutus Liber (Italy) Tue 18 Aug. 7.30pm. £2. Five artists from Turin combine installation and performance based on their shared research of scientific and alchemical texts. The installation can be viewed during the day. Performance art is little seen or made in Scotland and this should be worth skipping the Festival for. See Glasgow Theatre Listings for more info.
