band was formed in Glasgow in 1978 by Peter Thomson along with some school friends, although itwas touryears before the present line-up, which consists of Thomson (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Carole Branston (keyboards, vocals) and Charles Kelly (percussion), evolved.
Their first single release was ‘Betrayed’ on their own label in 1982, coming before their signing to Beggars Banquet. The two singles recorded for Beggars, ‘Fire Island’ and ‘Touch’ achieved modest success abroad, the latter reaching number4 on the American Rockpool charts, and selling 34,000 copies in Germany.
Having left Beggars Banquet after fairly typical contractual problems, Secession had a year during which they were unsigned, giving them time to write more commercially orientated songs lorthe major labels. In 1985 they made a rare live appearance — in New York, and recorded with Lew Hahn, the results of which could be heard on their debut single for Siren, ‘Michael’ which was about the character Michael Corleone from the Godfather 11 film.

Their last single, ‘The Magician’ was

a near hit in this country, reaching number 91 on the Gallup chart, and making the Radio One ‘A’ play list. They claimed that it was not totally representative of their sound, being more of an attempt to cross over between the dance and pop markets.
As Peter points out: ‘Everything we have released has done progressively
‘ better, although we are not that eager for success in this country.’
Whetherthat continues with their new single, ‘Promise'—anothertrack from the Lew Hahn session, remains to be seen. (John Williamson)
