What with their singer/guitarist Cath Carroll being a music critic herself (a freelancer for the NME for four years), it’s not hard to elicit a description of the music from the horse's, or rather pussycat's mouth: “The rhythm is a little funky, funk and reggae-based, and then a very simple linear melody.’ What goes unspoken is that she, along with bassist Ron Calne and drummer Chris Fenner, produce music in three-minute snippets that have all of pop’s charm with none of the brashness. They also use iazzier chords than is usual, and remember just enough of the 60s so as not to get bogged down in the sounds of the era. Their recent single (only their second, and theirlirst for Manchester’s Factory Records, supposedly a monolith of serious gloom), When It All Comes Down, is a gorgeous piece of work, a song that gradually and subtly works its way to the heart, which is where it ought to rest. Such a warm and pleasant change from the awful, identikit singles that pass through this
crackin' band.

office on their way to the dumper, Mlaow take a less busy path. They realise that pure pop isn’t about aping the latest hip hop beat or plundering the world's music library for an undiscovered samba beat, butiust being natural. Those who’ve heard of Miaow but not heard them, and may have got the impression of rabid feminism a-gogo, shouldn’t feel disquiet. Miaow lyrics are personal, intimate and evocative, not political diatribes (when decipherable - Cath sings so softly sometimes), but like the music have a bite and depth to them that becomes apparent after a few listens.
It would be terrible to think that Miaow are destined to inhabit the indie ghetto thatThe Go-Betweens are only now, after a decade, looking like they might be able to crawl out of, so give your support. Go and see them at Weavers in Paisley on Friday 26 June and Edinburgh's Venue on Saturday 27 June. (Mab)
