SOME WEIRD STAR
Forget the rest — Iggy Pop was the Godtather 01 Punk, one or the lew characters in rock who deserves the tag 01 ‘living legend‘ and he could whomp most at todays young suckers with one llick at his finely-tuned torso. Yet, despite his pre-eminence in rock music, his career has probably been the most erratic and star-crossed in the business. Fortunes have been piled up by some at those who were inspired by the tirst three Iggy and The Stooges albums (visceral. primal rock 'n’ roll carnage) while rock 'n' roll’s original animal has dwelt in poverty, and in and out at detox clinics. No label has ever released more than three Iggy Pop albums-despite their massive inlluence, sales neverwarranted it— but now it looks like his current contract with A&M could be a prolitable one lor both parties.
‘I need to prove to myself that I can make this transition lrom God’s garbage man,‘ he told the papers last year. He seems to be doing just that. An abstainer lrom all drugs and alcohol for the last three years, lggy has been kept solvent by the loyalty at his old friend David Bowie, who not only rescued him lrom an asylum and produced his comeback solo albums The Idiot and Lust For Lite in the late Seventies, but had a massive worldwide hit with the lggy-penned China Girl and included no less than live at his lyrics on the Tonight LP.
Now, in his lortieth year, being launched anew on the record-buying public, he's in the unprecedented (tor lggy—the royalties trom Siouxsie And
The Banshee's version at his all-time classic The Passengerwere a bonus) position at having now had two hit singles: Cry For Love and Real Wild Child, both from his debut AGM album Blah Blah Blah.
The album has disappointed ardent Pop disciples for its state-ot-the-art
antiseptic rock sound (co-produced by D. Bowie), but this is made up lor by a greater lyrical depth and clarity than lggy’s known toryears.
Iggy Pop presents his current wares at the Edinburgh Playhouse on Tuesday 16 June. He’s back—and here to stay. (Mab)
