Glasgow's first International Jazz Festival is a huge event and will bring some of the heaviest names in jazz to the city in a few weeks time. A pick would include Gary Burton, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, The M.J.O., Sarah Vaughan and Benny Carter. . . and that’s only the Americans. Full programme in next issue of The List and from Ticket Centre, Candleriggs. Opened just in time for the festivities is Gillespies, down by the river in Cheapeside. A purpose built extension and barwill promote jazz most nights of the week. The accent is mainly mainstream and traditional but Bobby Wishart has the regular Saturday night slot and there are occasional evenings of modern jazz and blues etc (see Jazz listings). One of the venture's moving forces is Jimmy Alston, singer with the George McGowan Orchestra. We wish success to their enterprise. Also in Glasgow, Blackfriars in Bell Street is scouting for new talent to play

THAT’S JAZZ

evenings, contact Alan Cunningham on 041552 5924. Over in Edinburgh, Duke Ellington’s favourite guitarist, Kenny Burrell, arrives with his own trio (12 June). Happy playing with Coltrane, he is master of a few other idioms, from a blues bass with Jimmy Smith to the full blown Gil Evans. Ellington’s music, with that of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller and Count Basie, can be heard in the big band line-up of The New Squadronaires (Edinburgh 15 June). Within the overall band is a small Dixieland unit, The Squadlanders and a foursome including two girl singers—The Squadcats. Clarinettist and leader Harry Bence first played professionally, aged 12, at Greens Playhouse in Glasgow and laterwith Ted Heath and Joe Loss. This reconstructed end-of-the-war RAF swing band even performs with a surreal suspended Lancaster bomber (see photo). (Norman Chalmers)
