Glasgow — Locomotive Builder to the World Until Tue 30 June. Just up the road from the derelict railway works and surrounded by industrial and domestic ground now grassed over. Springburn Library houses
Glasgow‘s only community museum.
Between 1865 and 1962 Glasgow exported 18.000 locomotives to over 60 countries in every continent. These impressive statistics are borne out in an exhibition at Springburn on the locomotive industry which once made this area buzz with life. Mainly photographs with lots ofinteresting text. TVSW The latest loco to come alive in Glasgow has been built ofstraw not steel and after a ceremonial parade. was hoisted into the arms of the Finnieston Crane. once the transporter of the real thing from Quayside to boat. Made by scul‘.’tor George Wyllie it is a triumph in stuffed engineering. It will be up for six weeks to remind us. as George said in his launching speech. ‘What about the future. what about energy. exports. the Clyde. ourselves‘." The international focus of Mayfest is reflected in Third Eye‘s main exhibition. the work of a young artist from Prague. Her spectacular large-scale abstract drawings will be seen for the first time in the West. continuing the gallery‘s growing connections with Eastern Europe. Joanna Kirk Until Sun 7 June. By contrast. Kirk's drawings depict a middle class gentility in pastel. We are asked not to be taken in by the subject though — things are perhaps not quite what they seem.
