Elizabeth Blackadder and John Houston — Paints and Paintings Until Sat 6 June. Two senior artists. married for many years and based in Edinburgh, are showing for the first time together in Glasgow. Blackadder and Houston are known individually for their painting- Blackadder for her delicate, oriental flowers and haphazard objects. Houston for his land and seascapes. almost abstract in their sensation. For three years now they have been working at the Glasgow Print Studio and this exhibition brings together their etchings, supported by oils. watercolours and drawings.

Jim Tweedie — Paintings Until Fri 29 May. At the Open Circle (a small gallery in the library run by writers. artists and composers) Jim Tweedie‘s surrealist paintings can be seen in his first one-man show since 1981. His work is known internationally and he has shown with the Open Circle group abroad regularly.

Margita Tillova, Third Eye Centre, Glasgow
The Third Eye injected into the range oi visual art on show during Mayiest a welcome example of contemporary international work. The huge, exuberant and abstract paintings on view are the work of the tiny, 30-year old Margita Titlova lrom Czechoslovakia and are seen to particular advantage in the large and light space at the Third Eye’s main gallery.
Herwork belongs to an expressionist tradition which values lelt experience and sensation over illustration and narrative. The voice which comes through is vibrant and energetic
distinguished both by scale and temperament. She works on a generous scale, covering huge sheets oi paper with colour in rhythmic, apparently spontaneous gestures which makes them readily accessible. They are not paintings for close, quiet study, but should be enjoyed directly (and iorthis reason tail to work iully in reproduction). If there is a sense of almost childlike discovery which may be unlashionably naive, her exhibition is neverthless a refreshingly positive and bouyant lorce — an as art lrom a society we often regard as repressed interesting partly because 01 that. The Palace commemorates the shooting ofsix weavers during a wage strike in Glasgow in 1787. Martyrs oftrade unionism. they are being painted in a major mural by Ken Currie which will grace the dome of the museum. The Weavers panels will be ready in May and by September a full 2009 years ofGlasgow life and events will have been added to the work. The first major mural commission from Glasgow District Council since the Banqueting Hall. City Chambers. was completed in the 1890s. this project further illustrates the continuing interest in the visual arts during this decade. An exhibition around the panel tells the story ofthe Weavers and gives background to the textile industry. The Loveliest Night of the Year Sat 20 June. 9pm—4am.
