AEROSOL ACTION

Bad smells and weddings. Scottish Dance Theatre tackles both in their new three-part programme.

First the smells. Liz Lochhead’s lips loomed large on a screen hanging above the dancers and told us all about them. Good tea rose and bad cheese and all related to our bodily excretions. A neat idea, but the dancers took a back

seat to the mouthing lip gloss. With two ,

small videos, the screen, a perfumery of props, music by David Niven, voice-overs and a bath, the thrust of the piece was diluted in a congestion of ideas. Pointed Fifties' bras, shrink-to-Ilt jeans, lace masks and shampoos and sets moved in a hotch-potch of dance, music and visuals which, in imitating the outpouring of consumerism and advertising in our lives, gets trapped by It. Funny and enjoyable in parts with a cheeky Carmen Miranda solo by Louise Nelliwell and an aerosol march by the three female dancers which set the piece off to a promising start, the overall feeling was of turning the page: of a colour supplement without the ‘bit in the middle’ to lend the weight.

The wedding dance “Just Married’ was guest-choreographed by Douglas NIelson of New York. Fast and ever-entwining, the piece made SCT work hard to keep up. A lot of lifting was required, which put extra pressure on

their speed. Opening with bouncing tail-coats and lacy frocks, the wedding was followed through from toaster-giving hen parties to a flashlight ceremony which glimpsed at thefuture.

Unfortunately, the second dance In the programme ‘Five Women’ was not performed live. The Musicians' Union ruled against itas live music was not used impossible as Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell were just two of the musicians on tape. A video of the piece was shown instead, but limited resources determined quality, which was poor. The dance suffered accordingly and it is not possible to comment. (Alice Bain)
