Wallace emerges as a pugnacious. proud hard-man. a product and spokesman of his times and his divided. oppressed country. Through his story. narrated in short. punchy scenes. Evans paints in a picture of a ravaged. ununified Scotland ruthlessly economically exploited by the English Edward I. A bold. play. marred by overwriting and. at the outset of the tour. overacting.

O The Gorbals Story 7:84 Scotland in the production (premiered at Mayfest) by David Hayman of Robert McLeish‘s 1940s play about life in a crowded Gorbals tenement during the post-war housing crisis. Though the production doesn‘t overcome the sentimentality bound up in the play it is buoyant. intelligent and funny and lends dignity to the characters. excellently played by the cast. O Gillespie Borderline Theatre Coin Bryan Elsley"s stage adaptation (premiered at Mayfest) ofthe turn-of—the-century novel by J. McDougal Hay about the entrepreneur Gillespie. who takes over and ruthlessly exploits a small fishing community in the West of Scotland. Elsley‘s taut adaptation retains the intensity and momentum of Hay‘s teeming. powerful original. and. though he doesn‘t force the point home. it is evident that the ‘spirit of materialism‘ that Elsley is exposing is not confined to the late 19th century. Morag Fullerton‘s production moves forward through bold swing ofmood. from the jaunty to the melodramatic. and though it is over self-consciously jolly in places. it works up to a black pitch with a strong confrontation between Gillespie and his victim-turned-avenger, Margaret Galbraith. 0 The Steamie Wildcat Stage Productions in their tremendously successful musical show (premiered at Mayfest) set in an old communcal washhouse. Written by Tony Roper and performed by an excellent cast (including Elaine C. Smith. Dorothy Paul. Ida Schuster and Katey ‘Miss Toner‘ Murphy). the show is basically a series of episodes which add up to a tribute to the humour and resilience of hard-pressed working women and re-affirm the importance ofcommunal support. lfoffers a rather roseate view of the past. but is very funny and positive. and contains a devastating discussion of the virtues ofmince.
