radical intrusion into architectural aesthetics in the early nineteenth century, Labrouste’s iron-built Bibliotheque Ste-Geneive was a triumph of graceful construction (built in 1843-50). Joseph Paxron went on to underline Labrouste‘s point with the Crystal Palace, Hyde Park in 1851 , and the place of iron in architecture was guaranteed.

Dill Wright- Paintings and Ed Thompson - Ceramics Until Sat 18 Apr. Two artists chosen to complement each other as both share a love of working in remote places, inspired by their environment. Thompson, who is deaf, works on Harris and uses spiral or assymmetrical forms with oxides and varied textures; Wright works at Kintyre taking the sea and its moods
as his subject.

Peter Howson New Small Works Until 2 May. Well known — and much acclaimed — for his powerful draughtsmanship, Glasgow is Howson‘s adopted city and the source of much of his inspiration.

Work by Gwyneth Leech and Claire Harrigan. Leech, after winning an RSA scholarship, took a bicycle into the Italian countryside and attracted not a little comment as she sketched the Tuscan landscape by the roadside. The oils and watercolours here are based on these drawings. Harrigan’s travels took her further south (funded mainly by the Mary Amour Award, received in 1986) and her subject is the fertile abundance of St Kitts in the Bahamas. 0 PEOPLE'S PALACE MUSEUM Glasgow Green, 554 0223. The Cowlairs Locomotive Works 1841-1966 A new display describing the history of one of the first large railway works in Britain opened recently. By 1900, 850 locomotives and thousands of carriages and wagons had already been made and dispatched. The display also includes colour photographs of the Cowlairs Incline, where trains were hauled uphill by rope.
