That the band who brought out such singles as Bachelor Kisses, Part Company and Man 0’ Sand to Girl 0’ Sea (all to be round on the majestic Spring Hill Fair LP) should still be trudging around the smallest venues is something that should be rectilied as soon as possible.
The Go-Betweens boast the conventional two-guitar line-up, but stretched and re-shaped by Forster and McLennan‘s poignant, poetic approach to songwriting. Go-Betweens songs, otten evoking emptiness and deepest loss, can be dillicult at lirst, but one is easily entrapped by the compelling currents and sways at their music.
Robert Forster, the tar-irom-sell- eiiacing singer, and not a man renowned lor veracity, claimed recently that many 01 The Go-Betweens’ record buyers are in the over-50s age bracket and, inspired by that paragon oi sartorial elegance Blake Carrington, Forster himself has had his hair dyed a letching silver-grey - ‘so that I could look like a respectable older man.‘
Whether this spit in the eye 01 fashion will help the band from rags to riches is questionable, but there’s no denying thattheir latest single, Right Here, is their poppiest and most commercial ollering to date, a taster for an album entitled Tallulah, to be released soon, and featuring the talents oi new member, multi-instrumentalist Amanda Brown, who will be playing with the band at Edinburgh‘s Hoochie Coochie Club on Friday 24 and Strathclyde University on Saturday 25.
