Barbara Rae’s subject matter here is landscape but it is not landscape as an event as in a great storm orseascape. Specilic appearance is not her concern. Rather heraim is generic; we don’t contront sea tor example, so much as the sense oi sea.
She tinds the dynamics at a landscape in perspective, colour or form and uses this as an axis to open up its painterly possibilities. While discovering with great skill what the paint can be made to do, she pushes it more and more towards the abstract. Colour and line hold the image, but only just. She stops short oi complete abstraction but takes the image to its representational limits. In ‘Sea Presence, Wester Ross’ what we recognise is an impression ot a place, not an identity. Similarly with ‘French Garden’ or ‘Spanish Fields’. Other titles are suggestive oi her approach to painting, as in ‘Tree Line, Melting Snow’ which merges lorm and colour, while in ‘Flood Water, RiverAulumn’ water sweeps and floods in the lines. A single blue line near the top at the picture tirme holds onto the concept ol river, suggesting lluidity but stability.
Rae looks tor the texture and variation in landscape and linds it in testing and exploiting the varied behaviour oi paint. There is also an enjoyment oi surfaces incorporating tor example, gold loll into ‘Peat Bank, Erradale’ and using the resisting properly at toil to paint lor rich textural effect.

Opened only seven months ago, Springburn Museum has already delighted thousands of visitors with its displays of past times when this area of Glasgow was famed for its locomotive industry.
The Cowlairs Locomotive Works 1841-1966 A new display describing the history ofone of the first large railway works in Britain opens on 19 Feb. By 1900, 850 locomotives and thousands of carriages and wagons had already been made and dispatched. The display also includes colour photographs of the Cowlairs Incline. where trains were hauled uphill by rope.
A free pocket-sized guide to steam railways. centres and museums throughout the British Isles has just been produced by BP Oil on behalf of the Association of Railway Preservation Societies.
Copies of the 1987 BP Guide to Steam Trains are available free of charge by sending a 9in x 4in stamped addressed envelope to: ARPS, 3 Orchard Close, Watford, herts WD13DU.A notable omission is, however. the Springburn Museum.
