Bringing the joint Scottish Opera/Welsh National Opera cycle of Janacek operas to a close, From The House Oi The Dead opens in Glasgow on Wednesday 25 Feb. Based on Dostoevsky’s novel, Notes From The House 01 The Dead, written lrom the author’s own experiences as a prisoner in Siberia, it is a compelling, it grim, account of Iiie in a Tsarist Russia prison camp. No flowery plots, sub-plots and sub-sub-plots here of romantic tenors ialling wildly in love with lyric sopranos and big, bad barltones chasing matronly mezzos round the set. It’s an almost exclusively male line-up, with most of the major roles being taken by the original cast. John Mitchinson,

Given by members ofthe SNO and friends, Walton‘s The Bear is the opera and Hext’s The Earth Compels for tenor, piano and percussion is an interesting sounding new work.

The British Federation onoung Choirs comes to Glasgow for its first singing day in Scotland, following successful similar events in Leicester and Croydon. Programme includes Zadok The Priest. Vivaldi‘s Gloria and St Nicolas by Benjamin Britten. Choirs taking part include Glasgow Youth Choir, Kevock Choir and at least a dozen others.
Graham Clark, Nigel Douglas, Paul Strathearn, Donald Maxwell and Leon Berger all appeared with WNO at the Dominion Theatre, London where the production walked all with the coveted New Opera Award oi the Society of West End Theatres. Joinging them tor the first staging in Scotland are iamillar Scottish Opera names including Norman White, Bill McCue, John Robertson and Rosanne Breckenridge. Richart Armstrong, who recently relinquished his position as Musical Director ol WNO alter a triumphant Ring Cycle, conducts, David Poutney directs and designs are by Maria Biomson. It’s time to Celebrate Vienna with the Scottish Singers and Sinfonietta and somehow no music by Strauss (except in Wine, Women and Song in Berg‘s arrangement, so that doesn’t really count). The new Viennese school is also represented by its other two great masters - Schénberg and Webern, but Brahms and Schubert get a look in too.
