For eighteen years Scottish Ballet has toured ‘small scale’ around Scotland. The classics are transported out of the city centre venues, dovetailed to suit less spacious surroundings and performed in smaller communities and towns.

This year, the outskirts 01 Edinburgh have been put on their touring schedule. The programme at Portobello Town Hall on 3 March begins with ‘Othello’ —jealousy and passion drive the story to its terrible

conclusion. Peter Darrell’s ‘Five Ruckert Songs’, the centrepiece, describes a disillusioned woman’s discovery of peace. Highlights from the classic, ‘Napoli’, by Bournonville, brings the evening to a close.

March 22—29 Assembly Theatre have organised a week ofdance which will not only highlight Scotland‘s contemporary companies. but also provide a much-needed opportunity to see the work ofother British and international dancers. In the evenings dancers like the indefatigable tap dancer Will Gaines. Paulene Daniels from the Netherlands and Astrakan from France will perform their latest works. As well as lunchtime performances. there will be classes and workshops at all levels and in many techniques—jazz. kathak (Indian). ballet and jive are just some. Two dance companies will be in residence during the week.
