expressionistic style oi abstraction to arrive at the set oi cyphers repeated in these recent works. Like musical notes or letters at an alphabet, they stand alone as tragments or together as a phrase. They can be read irom tell to right, top to bottom, cornerto corner.

FIVE ON SHOW
Sometime ago Alasdair Gray, best known lor his novels, made the decision to give up waiting ior someone else to organise a retrospective ol his work as a visual artist. Full steam ahead, he began organising the show to include tour artists oi his generation. Alter months oi preparation with the help at lriends, the mammoth Five Artists show opened last week at Glasgow’s McLeilan Galleries. Gray is joined by Carole Gibbons, James Connolly, Alasdair Taylor and the late Alan Fletcher.
The exhibition will move to Edinburgh (Talbot Rice and 369) in January when it will be reviewed by The List.

them there are clouds and tiny tornadoes-lorthe most part natural but perhaps there is a blackerwarning. The symbols in ‘Deep in the Forest’ have been scratched blue and green out oi black ink. The Scottish Arts Council's choice show Bellany‘s latest work — gentle. sunlit watercolours and drawings inspired by the artist's second honeymoon in the French fishing village of Le Treport. Etchings from 1966—86 come from the Printmakers‘ Workshop exhibition and show Bellany‘s versatility and mastership ofline.
