Charles Nowosielski has already mounted several productions ol Netta Reid‘s beautilul, intriguing Shepherd Beguiled (with Theatre Alba) and in this re-worked production it shows. There is a leeling ol assurance about the whole thing: a happy marriage between Nowosielski's characteristic, delicate style, his love at broad Scots, and Reid’s mystical haunting play.
Reid's play investigates the strange case at Robert Kirk, a seventeenth century Scottish minister pursuaded ol the existence at a ‘Secret Commonwealth' ol laeries (not the pretty-pretty creatures, but cold uncanny spirits), who eventually and mysteriously disappeared. Was he mad, driven gradually into hallucination by his dreadlul griel over the death at his lirst wile, or did he really stumble on something so potent that he was silenced? Is the play a cautionary moral tale ol misplaced love?

Reid’s play linds its strength in that it is constantly ambivalent and Nowosielski's production reflects this, balancing the mystical and the psychological with an eerily real laery kingdom and a set ol substantial, well-meaning mortals who learlor Robert’s sanity. He uses the whole auditorium, surrounding the audience with the ‘other’ world and the characters are soundly portrayed — with a particularly strong perlormance lrorn Garry Stewart whose grave, kind minister develops hunt a man obsessed to one possessed. He is well supported by John Grace and Iain Wotherspoon and Barbara Rallerty as his laded second wile.
Richard Cherns' haunting music casts a veil over the production to create a mystical, magical atmosphere that, unlike some productions this season that have wandered into sell-indulgence, iskept beautifully in check. (Sarah Hemming)
