MacColla lamented Scotland's repressed potential. lambasting the Kirk for depressing the poetry. song and spirit of the Highland people. through the figure of Murdo. a young and imaginative Highlander (The Albannach) who eventually leads a musical rebellion. McGrath‘s adaptation is a jaunty. sketched outline ofthe story that Finlay Welsh‘s production. now faster and tauter than before. brings to life with good humour. important. This is true also of The Sirens. ‘Most of oursongs are chosen fortheir message as much as fortheir music,’ says Alison Ingram, one of the three. Their music is a cappella, mostly with a jazz/blues basis and the factthat this is a fairly rare sound was what drew them together: ‘We were all interested in getting together because we felt that, particularly in Scotland, there weren’t many women doing this sort of stuff’. Since then, their combinations of strong politics and sweet harmony has brought them several airings, encouraging them to begin to write their own music, as well as harmonising older songs, and to think of developing the group into something more fully-fledged.
