A ‘lion’ and a ‘tiger’ (in real life two of the Zoo‘s staff!) are freed from their ‘cage’ by their friend the ‘panda’ — fortified with Irn Bru! Once free , they make their escape by Clyde Helicopter to Glasgow Airport and fly by British Midland to Amsterdam to see their pals in Rotterdam Zoo! Lots of fun and excitement, and free Irn Em!

lolanthe, Theatre Royal, Glasgow The speed and wit of Gilbert and Sullivan has been chosen by Scottish Opera tortheir specially adapted opera for Schools and Young Audiences. Designed to introduce children to the drama and fun of opera in a highly accessible way, lolanthe has been compressed into a taster format of ‘pretty racy stutl’ according to Assistant Director Stephen Langridge, whose previous work includes work with

The Secret of NIMH (U) (Don Bluth, US, 1982) 82 mins. Sat 8 Nov. The ailing Timothy-mouse is one of four offspring who have to move from their comfortable home in a farmer’s field. Another children’s classic, this time from America, in an animated feature-length version, with the voices of Derek Jacobi and John Carradine. Well worth catching.

Dirty Rascals-The Video plus Animated Films Mon 3 and Tue 4, 5pm. £1 (50p). As part ofthe Theatre Workshop’s Young People’s Theatre Week, the Junior Youth Theatre show their stuff with the short video of Dirty Rascals in which the rich young ‘King of the Castle’ gets his come-uppance! This is followed by films from the 10- 14 year-olds in the Film Workshop Trust Animated Workshops which include eight short pieces of animat- ion, from The Phone Callto E, T, 2,

- The Snowman Pep-Up Raymond Briggs (Hamish Hamilton £8.95) The market may seem to be already flooded with Snowmen from Raymond Briggs with the book. the film ofthe book. music from the film and even Snowmen on cups and saucers. but this book is, nevertheless, a must! There is again no text in this version — it is an unspoken magical world of flying Snowmen which is wordlesst evoked in delightful 3D pop-ups. But the real charm of the book comes on the very last page - as a wonderful surprise! 0 The Walking Stones Mollie Hunter (Magnet £1 .50). Mollie Hunter is as good a story teller as the Bodach (old man) she describes. The Bodach taps a wisdom beyond common knowledge and young Donald Campbell finds himself unexpectedly drawn into his mysterious magic. Effortlessly told in an easy and convincing style. it races along. For seven years +. o The White Stag Adventure Rennie McOwan (Richard Drew £2.75). Sequel to Light on Dumyat, in which four rather earnest children are caught up in a Famous Five type adventure. full ofgood and useful detail about living outdoors and respecting wildlife. 0 Sleeping Warrior Elizabeth Gowans (Hamish Hamilton £6.95) The tone is more reflective than dramatic in Sleeping Warrior which describes the consequences for a shepherd‘s family when he suddenly falls ill. Interestingly. amongst the characters introduced are a woman in prison and her schoolgirl daughter. lightly touching on the difficulties oftheir experience. A gentle rather than gripping read.
