BOOKS

- The Snowman Pep-Up Raymond Briggs (Hamish Hamilton £8.95) The market may seem to be already flooded with Snowmen from Raymond Briggs with the book. the film ofthe book. music from the film and even Snowmen on cups and saucers. but this book is, nevertheless, a must! There is again no text in this version it is an unspoken magical world of flying Snowmen which is wordlesst evoked in delightful 3D pop-ups. But the real charm of the book comes on the very last page - as a wonderful surprise! 0 The Walking Stones Mollie Hunter (Magnet £1 .50). Mollie Hunter is as good a story teller as the Bodach (old man) she describes. The Bodach taps a wisdom beyond common knowledge and young Donald Campbell finds himself unexpectedly drawn into his mysterious magic. Effortlessly told in an easy and convincing style. it races along. For seven years +. o The White Stag Adventure Rennie McOwan (Richard Drew £2.75). Sequel to Light on Dumyat, in which four rather earnest children are caught up in a Famous Five type adventure. full ofgood and useful detail about living outdoors and respecting wildlife. 0 Sleeping Warrior Elizabeth Gowans (Hamish Hamilton £6.95) The tone is more reflective than dramatic in Sleeping Warrior which describes the consequences for a shepherd‘s family when he suddenly falls ill. Interestingly. amongst the characters introduced are a woman in prison and her schoolgirl daughter. lightly touching on the difficulties oftheir experience. A gentle rather than gripping read.
