GISELLE I I

King's Theatre, Edinburgh.

The white-clad, gauze-waving spirits in the second half are the Wilis - unfortunate beautiful baddies, who lure men to their death. Scottish Ballet create their rocky lair in a revival of Peter Darrell’s 1971 production of Giselle.

It's a Romantic story of love enduring beyond the grave. Giselle commits suicide over a broken heart, amidst a butt-coloured medieval crowd. She dances again to save her lover from the Wilis.

Noriko Ohara has expressive qualities well suited to the drama of the lead role, though some of her siren companions in the wilderness tread a

little too heavily to be convincing as spirits. Ethereal drifting is, admittedly, difficult on the small King’s stage. However, a cosy, enjoyable Giselle. (Alice Bain).
