BYRDS OF A FEATHER
Glasgow’s Chesterton Lalonde All Star Jazz has Charlie Byrd (see photo), Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis in a jazz guitar showpiece (27th). Byrd is an exponent oi the acoustic instrument on which his early background in jazz and foreground in classical music, including studies with Segovia, have equipped him with an unique, iluent iingerstyle oi guitar playing. In contrast Barney Kessel has moved from the American country and hillbilly pickin' oi his early teens through the rhythm sections of the Big Bands to his position as one oi the leading guitarists in the jazz world.
With Oscar Peterson and subsequently Ella Fitzgerald, Herb Ellis has won countless jazz polls and enjoys the smaller group iormat, working regularly as a duo with Kessel.
Edinburgh (17th) sees the return of Art Farmer, whose ilugelhorn is teamed with Brian Keddie’s trombone and quintet. A similar liaison a year or so ago produced one of the Queens Hall's best nights, Farmer obviously enjoying the music immensely.
Schlitz are sponsoring a national competition to ‘discover’ the best new jazz band ot1986, the winner being given a recording contract, media attention etc . . . Those groups having exhibited ‘a distinctive quality, exciting expression and technical excellence' are to do iriendly battle in the semi-final in Edinburgh’s Oueens Hall (24th).
