GLASGOW
O CITIZENS Gorbals Street, 429 0022/8177. Box Office Mon—Sat 10am—8pm. Bar. [D]. An Ideal Husband Until Sat 27 Sept. 7.30pm. £3. Concs£1 in advance, Students £1, OAPs and UB40s free on the door. A magnificent opening production for the Citizen’s autumn season: Philip Prowse‘s dark, sumptuous production of Oscar Wilde’s play. As a politician’s brilliant career is threatened by the possible revelation that it is founded on fraud and the selling ofcabinet secrets, the 1890’s play becomes startlingly t0pical, Victorian values and all. Wilde‘s wit leads us a merry dance through morals, ideals and moral sanctimony - not least as the basis of love, and Prowse’s cast balance the wit and the wisdom beautifully, with some really fine performances from Harry Gibson, Roberta Taylor and Jill Spurrier. 0 CUMBERNAULD THEATRE Cumbernauld, 023 67 32887. Smith as his perplexed wile, clearly revel in the farcical comedy.
Behind the humour, author Dario Fo has allowed a clever political satire to lurk. The worker-management relationship is treated in a manner at once sceptical and mocking.
Last year the show played to packed audiences, and this year it's in but demand again. The spontaneity, energy and iniectlous good humour of the cast win over audiences eltortlessly. This Is a production that pulls no punches. (Helen Davidson)
