it’s hard to imagine that an actor of the calibre ot Sir Anthony Duayle should be spending his latter years worrying about money. Yet with the sell-inflicted
f burden and joy at a touring theatre
company on his hands, that is exactly
what is uppermost in his mind.
The star who has played in lilms such as The Eagle Has Landed, Lawrence ol Arabia, and The Guns ol Navarone, deliberater eschewed the prospect of leading West End roles, or retirement in the sun — he sold his boat— to set up Compass Theatre in 1983.
Now taking the part at the pompous dean in the company’s Dandy Dick, a comedy on horse-racing by Pinero, Duayle has no regrets about the ditticult venture he started. ‘To go on tour and actually leel you are making a national contribution to theatre, is very exciting.’ It is a project which he hopes may even promote a greater leeling ot unity within a Britain beset with North/South prejudices.
