The Art ot the Portrait Until Sat 25 Oct.

Portraits are back in fashion and the City Art Centre this month puts a few of their faces on display. Works by the master Raeburn and the

caricaturist John Kay, two figures prominent in ‘enlightenment’ days, William J ohnstone and Jacob Epstein are amongst those selected from the City’s collection. The range is wide - from large public commissions to intimate sketches, promising a ‘mini’ history of the portrait. Holyrood Art Club Until Sat 4 Oct. O COLLECTIVE GALLERY 52—54 High Street 564 7146. Tue, Wed, Fri 12.30—5.30pm,Thurs12.30—7pm, Sat 10.30am—5pm. Closed Sun and Mon. Phlllp Power Until Wed 24 Sept. A mixed media piece made specially for the Collective space. There’s a couple of chairs painted black leaning against the wall, there’s an old piece of washed-up boat hanging from a frame, there’s a flashing light, a neon and a table with a few odds and ends on it. All in all, the installation at the Collective doesn‘t add up to very much. The attempt at creating an atmosphere (if that was the intent) falls dead on the eyes and ears (the music beats, sub-Grace Jones). Is this meant to be taken seriously? If it’s a joke it might be partially redeemed.
