Downstairs the visitor walks through a recreation, with words and music, of eighteenth century Edinburgh; upstairs there is an exhibition of paintings, books and manuscripts of the period.

History of Shell Collecting Until Sun 28 Sept. Rare. early shell books dating from the 17th century. 19th century illustrations by Thomas Gray. collector. and beautiful. prized shells including those brought back by Captain Cook from the South Seas. make up this unusual exhibition from the Natural History Department.
Soft Sculpture Until Mon 29 Sept. Snakes and plants made from the contributions ofover 500 people for the Edinburgh Knitting and Crochet Guild's stand at a Glasgow Sewing and Crochet show. The work was donated to Glasgow last year. English Etchers1880-1940 Until Sun 2 Nov.
Design for Savings Until Mon 3 Nov. The first ever showing of National Savings posters including the original artwork. The exhibition marks the 125th anniversary ofthe founding ofthe National Savings Bank. the headquarters ofwhich are in Glasgow. Poster personalities urging the public to save with the bank range from an armour-clad Joan ofArc to a smiling Miss 1986 under an arch ofgiant daffodils. A free commemorative catalogue is available.

Three in One Until Tue 30 Sept (closed 26-29 Sept inc). A trio of young organisers have been behind the scenes at the Collins Gallery for a year. This week they step out front. each presenting his or her own exhibition idea for public consumption. Meg Mitchell. Sheena MacFarlane and James Gallacher belong to a unique scheme. Last year. for the first time in Britain. the EEC agreed to fund a training programme for exhibition organisers in conjunction with Strathclyde University. to which the Collins is attached.
The three exhibitions sharing space are very different in character. James Gallacher looks at the past on the streets in ‘Sculpture Observed‘. the artist in architecture.
Meg Mitchell looks to our future. the artist and conservation. She has selected four well-known photographers to illustrate the theme ‘Disturbed Ground‘.
Finally. Sheena MacFarlane looks at the funnies today. cartoonists in the news. Seeing them out ofprint in her exhibition ‘Comic Features‘ provides the opportunity to compare the different branches of humour. Identity/Desire: Representing the Body The Scottish Arts Council‘s first trainee exhibitions organiser will be mounting this exhibition which during October looks at contemporary artists‘ views of the human form. The Listwill be covering this event in more detail next issue.
