POpular and enjoyable, but then you knew that already.

Atthis point in time there is no one quite like James. The Mancunian tour-piece exude a slightly monkish, slightly eccentric sense of diilerentness, one part alootness to two parts vulnerability, which marks them apart. Formed iour year's ago they have spent their time iinely tuning and developing the James-eye view at the world, now displayed in all its wayward glory on their excellent new album ‘Stutter’. James sing of disease oi cruelty, oi paranoia. The LP’s closing track ‘Black Hole’, an absolute stormer live, is an anthem of despair, culminating in a horrifying vision oi a myriad oi open graves. James are sometimes irightening.
But black-clad doomsters they are not, tor James mate their bleak lyrics
with a music that attests to the transcendent power oi the guitar and the drum. James are the spikiest janeg guitars plus the wildest drumming; the
result is a cathartic energy where doom j gives way to blood-rushing excitement. e A James live performance is one oi
