0 Pop Wallpaper, Ege Barn Yasl, The Crows, Skanga Albert Hall. 7.30pm. Rock ‘n‘ roll hits the Stirling Festival, and pretty appetising stuff it is too. Pop Wallpaper are commercial dance music with a Voice in the semi-operatic tones of Audrey Redpath; Ege Bam Yasi sport the latest in suffocation chic (James is modelling a jaunty little number in black plastic worn over the head), and play orgasmic synth funk with whipping on top; The Crows dress in black. but don‘t hold it against them, especially ifyour thing is Iggy-influenced hard rock; Skanga are bouncy reggae. POpular and enjoyable, but then you knew that already.

MONDAY 11

Edinburgh

Atthis point in time there is no one quite like James. The Mancunian tour-piece exude a slightly monkish, slightly eccentric sense of diilerentness, one part alootness to two parts vulnerability, which marks them apart. Formed iour year's ago they have spent their time iinely tuning and developing the James-eye view at the world, now displayed in all its wayward glory on their excellent new album ‘Stutter’. James sing of disease oi cruelty, oi paranoia. The LP’s closing track ‘Black Hole’, an absolute stormer live, is an anthem of despair, culminating in a horrifying vision oi a myriad oi open graves. James are sometimes irightening.

But black-clad doomsters they are not, tor James mate their bleak lyrics

with a music that attests to the transcendent power oi the guitar and the drum. James are the spikiest janeg guitars plus the wildest drumming; the

result is a cathartic energy where doom j gives way to blood-rushing excitement. e A James live performance is one oi

epic frenzy. Vocalist Tim Booth, his iolksy tones delivering an aura oi

quaint menace, all too often seems like 7 a man plugged into the National Grid. ; This hyperactive windmill oi arms and ; legs is backed by one oi the hardest-working, tightest combos around. James push so hard they threaten to tail apart. They are almost

too much. See them in Glasgow at 46 3 West George Streei14 Aug and the ' iollowing night at Edinburgh's Hoochie Coochie Club. (TrevorJohnston) 1

0 Martin Stephenson and The Daintees

Hoochie Coochie Club, West Tollcross. 9pm. £3.50. Another visit from the band whose Boat to Bolivia album has earned much critical acclaim. Lots oftwiddly guitars and some country-ster tales ofemotion and devotion in Stephenson’s often surprisingly personal lyrics. A selection of classic songs y’all should heat

0 The Pastels and Talulah Gosh The Onion Cellar at The Mission, Victoria Street. 10.30pm. IfThe

yet, you could do worse than check out some traditional Scottish jangling guitar music. The Pastels sulk inside their anoraks because they still haven‘t become as big as they've threatened to do, while

Talulah Gosh are simply young, wild

and decadent.
