The GMA, winner of last month’s 1986 Scottish Museum of the Year Award and shortlisted for the British Museum of the Year, has just received yet another accolade in the annual summer prizegiving - nomination for the European Museum of the Year award. Guided Tours On the first Wednesday of every month, at 2.30pm (free) a member of the curatorial staff will lead a tour of the gallery lasting approx three quarters of an hour. Questions and discussions will be invhed. ‘P is for Poodle’ Until Sat 2 Aug. An installation by General Idea, a threesome from Canada. It’s all a bit of a mystery. A not too serious mystery. The GMA have opened up their outbuilding (formerly a school gymnasium) to stable a collection of poodles, caught in the coils of the universe. Audience participation demands the pressing of a sound pedal at the door which lets loose a grinding lament over the darkened scene. The poodles pose obediently under theatrical lighting, and a mini-constellation twinkles as you move round the tableau. Even if you don’t connect the coils with Neptune, the milking stools with the Milky Way and its creator Hercules or the poodles themselves with the French Court artificiality of Marie Antionette, it’s worth a peek. ultra-violet light and very trendy headphones create an atmosphere which attempts to illuminate the period for the present day. Upstairs all the facts in a traditional layout with portraits, caricatures, the tools
of the intellectual trades of the time, lots of books and lots of labels. It’s a pity there had not been more cross-referencing with present-day thought.

The Enterprising Soot Sat 9 August - Sun 5 Oct. The collection (or at least a proportion of it) of the Royal Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street, moves down to the centre of town for the summer season. This exhibition looks at the reasons behind the success of Scottish enterprise abroad and at home. Audio—visual displays and a cinema will add to the display. Refreshment areas and shop will be open throughout the exhibition period.

Ronnie Browne Until Mon 4 Aug. Commonwealth Games. Ronnie Browne is the official artist to the Commonwealth Arts Festival and Commonwealth Games and this exhibition will be updated daily with his new work.
Contemporary Enamelling Fri 8 Aug—Wed 3 Sept. Enamelwork went into decline after an explosion during the Art Nouveau period and has only recently regained favour with artists. This exhibition shows work by several contemporary jewellers using a method including painted enamel by Wendy Ranshaw, plique-a-jour jewellery by Georgina Follet and cloisonné work by Jane Short.

Portraits and Dreams Until Sat 26 July. Photographs and stories by children of the Appalachians compiled by Wendy Ewald. Work by children from rural mining families who had never taken a photograph until Wendy Ewald, a young photographer, showed them how. Though technically naive, the results are powerful and eloquent. An unusual show well worth a visit.

Andrew Williams Until Sat 2 Aug. A Commonwealth Arts Festival Associated Event. Since the beginning of the year, Williams has been resident in the 369 Studio, creating a series of sportsmen with mountainous bodies from memories, but mostly photographs of a 1985 trip to America and in particular LA.
