Commonwealth Arts Festival. Its tangible beauty should provide a
stunning show lor all, where traditions and cultures are stitched and dyed into the textiles ol the member nations.
Around Edinburgh, about a dozen other galleries will be declaring allegiance to the Commonwealth from 17 July to 2 August (check dates lor each gallery). Most will be sporting shows initiated in this country, but at least a couple at them (as well as Soltwear, ol course) have booked in visitors lrom abroad. The Gallery of Modern Art will host General ldea’s ‘P is lot Poodle‘, an installation which, according to the gallery, is impossible to capture in a single image. Gold pails and poodles are to be used to poke ion at art, butwill itmerely be a mirror-image 01 its own message? We shall see. The English Speaking Union Gallery, perhaps not a lamiliarvenue to some, have captured an exhibition at Jamaican intuitive art. Known here less appropriately as naive or primitive, this artlorm of religious, working and domestic lite. Anyone who saw the artist Kapo, wheelchair-bound but powerlully charismatic in his turbans of many colours, on television recently, must certainly be drawn to this exhibition at sculpture and painting by this artist/priestand his lellow countrymen and women.
