MUSIC LIST

Bill Perkins (17 July, Glasgow) toured in Stan Kenton’s ’53 hand in the illustrious company of Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Erroll Garner, Stan Getz and Lee Konitz and remembers a classroom on wheels, a marvellous experience. His own tenor playing has shades of Webster and of course Bird, but in the main there remains the lasting influence of Lester Young, The President.

Perkin’s tracks from his long

PERKINS UP

association with the Woody Herman and Kenton outfits remain the most accessible of his recorded works though there are a couple of albums on which he leads his own small groups. In recent times he has taken every opportunityto play in a similar context, allowing more scope for solo improvisation and his audiences can expect to hear inspired music from one of the most gifted exponents of the tenor saxaphone.
