Bring on the Night (15) ‘3: (Michael Apted, UK, 1986) Sting, Omar Hakim, Branlord Marsalis. 97 mins. Shot over a nine day period in and around Paris, Bring on the Night documents Sting‘s departure trom The Police, the setting up ot his new hand using black, jazz musicians and the rehearsal tor, and perlormance ot, their lirst concert. Sting claims that the lilm's raison “he is to show the birth at a band rather than - in most lilms oi the type — the demise or last days at a group. Unlortunately we arrive at a time when the lormation ol the band is a lait accompli and when it looks and sounds as It it has been going tor some time — ratherthan having a real look behind
I the scnes at how musicians lrom such
vastly ditlering backgrounds get together both musically and personally. This is a minor quibble, however, the reason most ot you will go to see this lilm is tor the music — and
excellent it is too. Sting is one ot the truly brilliant musicians at our time and one who has remained rathertrue to his roots considering his present litestyle, although his story about the ship at the end at his street and its portents tor the tuture is a bit contrived. The band he assembled lorthe ‘Blue Turtle’ album and tour were undeniably wonderful and the concert and rehearsal lootage shows it to its best advantage.
What Bring on the Night won't show, though, is any scrap ol the true Sting. A complex and distant person, he never lets his image slip in tront ot the camera and even during the birth at his son (also captured on lilm) any hint of the real man shown by his tears is
. quickly lost by the practised,
protessional air with which he snips the umbilical and deliberately hands the scissors back to the doctor like the horn perlormer he is. (Graham Caldwell)
