Close, (Third Eye Centre, Glasgow) reveals the hidden splendour oi Victorian Glasgow. Wally (Wah-ley) is the Gaelic word tor ceramics and Carroll’s camera lovingly iocuses on the ornate patterned tiles which decorate the communal walls and stairways at many tenements in the city. Stained glass windows, another important period feature, benefit from the remarkably sensitive treatment oi light in these photographs. Patches oi translucent colour on gleaming walls and stone iloors impart an almost church-like atmosphere to the closes. The 4D coloured photographs are arranged in a progressive sequence beginning at the iront door and ending atthe top with a magniiicent skylight discovered in Dennistoun. This exhibition, the fruit of two years work, involved a painstaking search for photogenic specimens throughout the city. Carroll carried his equipment around surreptitiously in plastic bags instead oi camera cases as he hates “looking like a photographer'. Before

long he iound himseli tailed by plain clothes cops who clearly thought that the strange character lurking in stairways was up to no good. Few oi the closes are in pristine condition and Carroll's work conveys an acute sense oithe race against time: ‘I iound a beautiiul window in Hillhead but when I returned a few weeks later it was gone. Things are left to decay or destroyed in the name of commerce- people need their eyes opened. . .’
Born in a hole-in-the-wall bed in Caiton 30 years ago, Carroll ‘escaped’ to do a postgraduate degree at the London Royal College at Art and only
, decided to return home when he saw ' Tavernier’s ‘Deathwatch’ which was 3 lilmed in Glasgow. ‘l’ll neveriorgetthe

poster oi his Denistoun skylight with the words, ‘Paris? Vienna? No — Glasgow'. (Lucy Ash)
