Scotland, yet its 50,000 inhabitants k I

enjoy precious lew ot the tacilities taken lor granted by most communities at its size. Yet despite its chronic ' ' problems, the scheme has produced i artists and writers, has its own Festival Society and publishes a successiul newspaper covering all 14 districts ol Greater Easterhouse called The Voice. This exhibition (People’s Palace, Glasgow) celebrates some achievements and charts the scheme's general history trom the titties to the present day.
The 240d Easterhouse mosaic which adds a splash 01 colour to Lochend Road, began as a YDP scheme supervised by the artist Allan Kane. One hall depicts the tour seasons and the other. covered with symbolic snakes and ladders, dice, spinning wheels, cards and chess pieces graphically portrays tile as a game at chance.
Lite in Easterhouse is pictured in a more direct way by Colin Johnstone, a
harridans. Not even his dog Shep escapes the hypodermic (above). Another interesting exhibit is the intricate model oi a prefabricated house made as a family Christmas present in 1955. In Glasgow 2550 oi these temporary homes were built and proved very popular although they were only meant to last 10 years: ‘Hey-bab—a—ree-bab, ma mammy's gota prelab' was the jive talk rhyme chanted by boastful children in the post-war years. A 1950s sitting room complete with llying ducks, is the central exhibit and is caretully turnished according to the stage

directions in Archie Hind’s Easterhouse history play, The Sugarolly Story’. Among the photographs particularly eye-catching are the contrasting shots oi Frankie Vaughan who is pictured with Marilyn Monroe and with one of the scheme's street gangs: in 1968 the singer altered to build a youth club it rival gangs would call an amnesty and surrender all their weapons. The Cranhill Arts Project display in the adjoining room also leatures some telling portraits and some impressive screenprints, such as theirposter tor Clyde Film in bold primary colours.
