Against Robert Pettigrew‘s lovely ballad-like music and George Blackhall‘s almost abstract set. the cast draw graphic contrasts between the tranquillity oi the inmates and the bedlam oi the outside world. Society

emphasising the real iocus ot the production: the layers of hypocrisy surrounding both prostitution and the asylum. The latter. for all its shortcomings. practised an attitude iar in advance oi most ‘Victorian values‘ the contemporary relevance needs little stressing.

There are a few noticeable performances: Faye Milligan in particular. making a memorable. lormidable missionary and this is an imaginative. intelligent and alien funny example of a group working well together. (Sarah Hemming).
