Against Robert Pettigrew‘s lovely ballad-like music and George Blackhall‘s almost abstract set. the cast draw graphic contrasts between the tranquillity oi the inmates and the bedlam oi the outside world. Society
becomes a masked. cackling chorus ot .
Dickensian-iookingcharacters.
emphasising the real iocus ot the production: the layers of hypocrisy surrounding both prostitution and the asylum. The latter. for all its shortcomings. practised an attitude iar in advance oi most ‘Victorian values‘ — the contemporary relevance needs little stressing.
There are a few noticeable performances: Faye Milligan in particular. making a memorable. lormidable missionary and this is an imaginative. intelligent and alien funny example of a group working well together. (Sarah Hemming).
