MAKING SENSE

‘ls it important? You’re yelling so loud

It makes no sense at all.’

As that lumbering beast, the American hardcore punk scene, paints itself into . a comer, Husker Dii, a small trio with a 3 massive sound, seem to have found the 1 door marked exit and pushed. l-lard. Moving away from the harsh discordant

01 albums like Zen Arcade, their love of melody (singer/guitarist Bob Mould confesses a particular liking for Revolver-era Beatles) has led them to channel that huge slicing noise they

whip up, down more recognisable, traditional paths. Nowhere is this

better heard than in last year's killer 1 single Makes No Sense MAN (and it i sounds like a single, just like Teenage

i . thrashesthattookup large proportions l i i

. 2.: Kicks or Purple Haze, or something in between), where the song almost races away from the band in its eagerness to make it to the bridge. Make no mistake, Hiisker Dii music is still a thrash, but an intelligent, jackhammer precise and consummater musical one. What else could you say or a vision that encompassed all the above plus cover versions oi Ticket To Ride and The Byrd's Eight Miles High?

It you can't be bothered with the over-romanticised, see-it-at-a-glance dross that the likes or The Cult and The Alarm are perpetrating in the name oi rock music, give Hiisker Dti a chance on Friday 14 March at the Potterrow in Edinburgh and the next nightat Glasgow’s Mayiair. (Mab)

0 Robert Cray Playhouse Theatre . Greenside Place. 7.30pm. £5. £4 (stalls only). Back so soon? Blues guitarist of taste and economy. but not quite able to match up to the tremendous hype surrounding him last year. Still very much worth a visit. . o Sigue Sigue Sputnik Empire. Nicolson Street. 10pm. Before everyone else points it out. this is essentially what New York duo Suicide were doing nine years ago. Still. they’re exciting. and their realisation that ‘television is rock ‘n‘ roll’ puts them a few notches above Frankie in my personal credibility chart.
