Rock climbers have a euphemism for a pitch hanging over the void. It is graded Exposed. ln jazz terms, playing in concert as a duo rates at least V/Exposed. Sheila Jordan, vocals, and Harvie Swarz, double bass, have developed an uncanny understanding and empathy

A singersince her childhood in Pennsylvania and Detroit, she fell under Charlie Parker's spell, and in her twenties sang and lived among Bird, Mingus, Lennie Tristano and the new New York scene. A stormy marriage to Duke Jordan and a daughterto bring up kept her from going lull time as a pelormerand this, perhaps,

contributes to her obvious joy in singing. Parker was so taken by her ability to reproduce, vocally, a sax solo, and negotiate complex chord patterns, that be credited her with having ‘million dollar ears.‘

With Harvie she seems to take risks, but on any lightning melodic excursion he isthere, covering harmonically— sometimes even seeming to anticipate the changes. One or the world's great jazz singers, she is appearing with Harvie at Edinburgh's Queen’s Hall on 24 Jan, where the audience, like others all overThe States, will marvel at the pair’s inabilityto lall onthe mountain.
