0 Celtic Nations' Championships: Scotland v Wales v lreland Magnum Leisure Centre, Irvine. 1pm. Free. Not everyone’s idea of riveting action, weightlifting is a superb sport to watch. Spectators are guaranteed a well-organised, fast-moving and tension-filled afternoon. The Scots won this match comfortably in 1984. but the young Welsh team will make life harder this time. Scotland went down narrowly to Holland. 144-138, at Meadowbank last month. but the home team will be largely unchanged. Aside from national pride. the reward of Commonwealth selection is once again the spur.

Following a good response, this is the 4th annual inter-district event featuring youth sport development. 1985 is International Youth Year, and consequently, the Fife Institute is concentrating efforts to encourage young people to compete to represent their district in this multi-sport event. The programme covers 23 sports and approximately 650 competitors from NE Fife, Kirkcaldy district and Dunfermline district will participate in 3-cornered competition. In harmony with the ‘Ever Thought of Sport‘ campaign, this large scale event hopes to encourage both new participation and improvement of standards from those already involved.

In a new series of articles we will feature in each Issue one of Central Scotland's Country Parks and give some idea of their attractions and what goes on In them. Most importantly we will tell you how to get to them. The official definition of a country park Is ‘a park or pleasure ground which by reason oi Its position in relation to major concentrations of population affords convenient opportunities to the public for enjoyment of the countryside or open-air recreation.’ Each Country Park has Its own Individual attractions which we will highlight In this series; the first to be featured ls Balloch Catle Country Park. This Is a 200 acre park sItaated at the South West corner oi Loch Lomond and there are few better places to sit and admire the beauty oi the loch from than this lovely park. Although Balloch Park— as it is more commonly known ls worth visiting at anytime of year, with the onset of Autumn It Is currently ablaze with colour.

The park was transionned In the middle of last century by the Victorian owners who, like their contemporaries abroad, planted exotic species of trees and shnibs. As a result, we now have mature specimens of Calliomian

walk. but it is advisable to bring strong footwear, waterproofs and warm clothing.

0 A Hill to Conquer Guided Walk West Highland Way 10.30am. A five-mile circular walk, taking in Conic Hill, a superb vantage point over Loch Lomond. Boots, waterproofs and packed lunches essential. No dogs. Lasts 5 hours.

Redwood, Cedar, Tulip Tree, Monkey—Ponies, Cypress and Maple. There are also more common trees ; such as Ash, Oak, Scots Pine, Birch and g Elm. As well as ionnal gardens areas with many variants oi Rhododendron and Azalea, the park boasts line semi-natural woodland and grasslands which are Ideal for picnics and barbecues (booking lonns available from the Ranger Service). The major events In the park occur during the summer, but Dumbarton District Ranger Service Is present throughout the year. Based In the Country Park, they organise guided walks, Illustrated talks, visits to and by schools and give friendly advice on countryside matters. A Trim Trail is available for fitness fans and there are also Ieallets en the history of the park and a Tree Identification Trail as well as walks In the local area.

From Glasgow-Take A82 North, turn off to Balloch then follow signs.

From Stirling -Take A811 to Balloch, turn right before village then follow signs.
