With a 10 point margin to make up from the first leg in Spain, itwas a determined Murray International Metals side that met Real Madrid, seven-times winners at the European Basketball Cup, lorthe home tie at Meadowbank on 10 October.

After opening with last and lurious action. the game soon settled down to a more controlled pace with Real tending to dictate the play. MIM were not, however, at theirstrongest. Ralton Way was clearly hampered by a serious leg injury sustained in training, although he justified his selection with some pretty accurate shooting, and Bobby Archibald took some hard knocks during the play. The final score (76—72) retlected the balance of the contest with the Spanish side winning eliminating Murray lrom the tournament by an overall margin 0114 points.

Real Madrid, who have never been eliminated from the champions‘ cup before the quarter-final stage, now go on to play either Honved (Hungary) or Freibourg (Switzerland) in the second . round. Real's assistant coach, Clittord Luke, had promised an aggressive game against Murray, and his team lived up to it, buton the evidence of this pertormance Murray will provide tough opposition lor their next home opponents. the USS Hunley Sea Hawks on 25 October.

A blend ot Scottish and American talent, Murray can boast a history at

' Young and player/coach Sam Foggin (lormerly of Virginia Tech). Murray are building in both strength and performance and as basketball is now an international sport, they intend to be up there with the best. Team manager, Tucker Johnston, said they were “disappointed but not dejected’ at being knocked out by Real Madrid, but he nevertheless predicts a successlul domestic season lor Murray.

Although basketball is not generally reckoned to be as popular in Scotland as south of the border, the European game boasted a packed stadium and elsewhere the Scottish National League is shaping up well. Perth are making rapid progress and Boroughmuir expect to make a sponsorship announcement soon. Unlortunately, Team Glasgow— runners up in the men's First Division last season— have folded, leaving Falkirk, Boroughmuir and the Sea Hawks to pose the real challenges to the position of the Murray men.

All told, the game promises another season of excellent entertainment and the greatest single crowd-puller will once again be the MIM showman, Alton Byrd.
