(children/student standby tickets at door) Originally publicised as being on 22 October, note that this concert is now one week later. It’s certainly worth waiting for though as it’s the 40th Anniversary concert of the world famous Smetana Quartet. As you’d expect they’re playing a Smetana Quartet (From My Life) plus Mozart’s Quartet in E flat K428 and the Kreutzer Sonata by J anacek. Checltal St Cecilia’s Hall, Cowgate. 7.30 pm. £2.50 (conc £1.50). Tickets at the door. Nature and Love is the rather appealing sounding title of this Lieder recital in the style of the well known English group, The Songmakers’ Almanac. Allin all there are four singers (2 sopranos and 2 mezzos), 2 horns, harp and piano with various combinations performing duets, trios and quartets by Schubert, Schumann and Brahms including his Four Songs for Female Voices, 2 Horns and Harp, Op 17. English translations thoughtfully provided in the programme.

oChamber Music Concert, Mondrian Trio The Village Theatre , East Kilbride 48669. 7.45 pm. £2.50 (conc £2.00). The Mondrian Trio has been described as potentially the finest chamber ensemble in Scotland. Over and above technique, musicianship and rapport, the Trio has a quality of vision which gives a new dimension to their playing.

This excellent orchestra conducted by William Boughton attracted only a small audience last time they played in Edinburgh, but they really do deserve more , especially with the varied programme they’ve chosen this time.

First produced in London in 1949, Edinburgh Occasional Opera Group are reviving Sir Arthur Bliss‘s opera ‘The Olympians’ , with libretto by J. B. Priestley. The opera is based on a legend that when men ceased to believe in the Gods of Olympus, some of the gods became members of a troupe of strolling players, travelling the roads of Europe through the centuries. When the gods-turned-players recover their powers every 100 years or so on Midsummer’s Eve the resulting situation is somewhat complex. lt‘s luscious music and a rare chance to hear it.

Black Donald are a talented three- piece on a rare visit from Tain. Their first album was well received and they are on a tour of Scotland. Their material is all Scottish with many rousing instrumental sets.
Sileas are composed of Mary and Patsy from Sprangeen. They play metal-strung and gut-strung clarsachs and also the electric harp. Song and tunes from Scotland and Ireland.
