Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's film is thankfully free from record company spin as the boys allow themselves to be shown warts-aii'-all. MARGARET TAIT
A filmmaker who always saw her work more as a vocation than a profession, Margaret Tait often works as a kind of archivist of reality, whether that be recording the day to day events of Edinburgh life 50 years ago, as in Rose Street (Margaret Tait Programme 3), or capturing some of the relatively unchanging patterns of Orkney living present in Land Makars (Programme 4). Along with her ever supportive husband Alex Pirie, Tait devoted herself to her work in spirit, if not always finding the time and finance to do so in real life, and so there’s often a diary-like quality to the images she captures that may bring to mind the work of
Jonas Mekas.
But within this apparently casual aesthetic there’s both a rigour (an insistence in finding what is real life and not phoney sentiment) and a pressing question about what is this thing, ‘Scottishness’, and this land, ‘Scotland’. Not that Tait was an insular filmmaker. Though her background was very much in the John Grierson tradition of documenting reality, she actually studied at the Rome Film School in the early 19305, and while there made Three Portrait Sketches (Programme 1) on Italian artists. Finally, however, she seemed preoccupied with how Scotland could be perceived from the inside out and not - a la Brigadoon and Braveheart - outside in.
