Miles Fielder explains the elusrve and beautiful nature of the ROSEBUD strand of the Frlm Festival.
Dreamed up by former EIFF director Mark Cousins. who was inspired both by Welles‘ use of the name and by bomb craters in Sarajevo (where, bringing movies to the war-weary masses. he noticed the holes in the ground looked pretty. like rosebuds) the name was adopted by former director Lizzie Francke. And at some pornt between her term of office and the current artistic director's tenure it was expanded from its original use as a signifier of first time filmmaking to first and second films from new talent.
Sort of the opposite of the Director‘s Showcase strand of the Festival, which premieres established names who may also be regular returning filmmakers, such as Catherine Breillat, Rosebud. arguably. fulfils the more important role (for a film festival), which is to hoist “new shit‘ upon above par inquiring filmfest-goer minds. The importance of that role is reflected in this year‘s programme. with Rosebud taking the lion's share of the line-up. beating
