Dark Is The Night 000 (I‘I'lrlett Balloon (1! lt’t‘lut Row. until 27Aug. [1.30pm. I'm quite accustomed to things that go bump in the night. L'sually it means I'm plastered and have walked into the wardrobe. With this play Patti Sellar has adapted two short stories lor the stage. The .\'igltt II'ire. by ill“. Arnold. leatures three journalists working a news desk when a spooky story breaks. in The Ilitxymrk. by AM Burrage. a journalist spends the night in a wax museum where the dummies appear to be blessed with basic motor skills. Directed by Ken Bentley. this dramatisation is entertaining but lailed to scare this journalist. ‘()ne imagines them to be responsible people.‘ the inuseum manager say s ol hacks. So I'm oll early to bed. Shit. Who put that table there‘.’ (Kik Reid)

A Dark River 'I'lteutre Iltit'ksltup, until lo’Aug. 2pm: 3!) 27,-1ug. l/utn. l.orca’s Blmul ll'etlrling re-iniagined lor a group ol London Asians.

David Benson - To Be Frank

... Drtvitl Benson. l’lertyutu'e Home. until 27Aug. 4pm. Stand-up cum theatre show. which explores the lives ol both l-"rankie ilowerd and Benson himsell through impersonation and lloor discussions.

The Dead Move Fast 000 (ii/tier! Ital/nun. until 27.1ug. times vary. Sylvester Mc('oy is a doctor in charge ol a home lor the criminally insane in 1953 lingland. A murdering madman is on the loose. is the wacky doctor a lunatic who has taken over the asy lum'.’ ()r are any ol his lour co-stars the deranged killer'.’ iiveryone gives impeccably restrained perlormances. in brogues. tweed jackets, pipes and still upper lips. They really are game at trying to make the dull play work. So too is the continually inventive direction with live black screens sliding. slithering all over the stage. creating atmosphere. Yet it‘s to no avail. Paul Sellar's unoriginal script isjust not lunny enough. There's no barrel laughs. only occasional chuckles. This is an homage to the lialing comedies ol yesteryear. and the big dillerence is they were lull ol eccentric. loveable. humane characters who we cared about . The audience are lel't wondering what it's all about. In desperate need of originality. (John Binnie)

Dear Kitty .\'ewl)ur_v Youth Theatre. Quaker .Ileeting House. until lo'xlug. 8.30pm. Anne Frank inspired musical. Death and the Maiden Stun/mil ('IIive/‘sitv .Irlrul 7718!: (' lettue. 1‘) -26 Aug. Magnet. Douglas Maxwell's hit from last year returns in a version that the ever- inventive Grid Iron has been touring around England in recent months. A very funny and ultimately moving production. this piece examines the childhoods ol several young boys who encounter tragedy at an early age. l'nder Ben Harrison's direction. the original boasted strong perlormances. and a whimsical leeling about lost youth which evoked emotion without sentimentality. The all male cast get to do what actors love doing. playing children. and the swing park site-specific setting gels beautifully with the [let_\“s general ambience. ll you haven't. go see. ll you have. go see again. (Steve (’ramer)

Denity CI’ISIB Q.” ll!(’(lll'(' ('0, Old St Paul's ('lturr'lt A" Hull. until IIS'Aug, 6.30pm. ('hristopher Durang's comic exploration ol modern psychology and the nature ol sanity. A Desire To Kill On The Tip Of The Tongue ... Il'ise/mrt l’rruluetirms. (‘ I'ntlergrrmnrl. until 26 Aug. 9.30pm. Mark Ravenhill‘s adaptation ol Xavier Durringer's social drama has some nice moments. but rises to no great heights. At the centre is a young thug having an allair with a married woman. Barred lrom a clth where she's dancing with her husband. he calls on his best mate to help. The woman eventually meets him. as does the husband. t'gly' undercurrents indicate potential v iolencc. while lurther revelations of the sexual pasts ol the characters escalate the tension. But this tension is dissipated by a lack ol rigour in the script. and some uneven perlormances. The perlormers work hard at the dark humour latent to the script. but the rather wordy poetry ol the characters' street language tends blunt the edges. (Steve (‘ramerl

Diamonds and Price Present Under Laboratory Conditions Diverse Attrur'tirms. 20—25 Aug. 6pm. (‘omedy' double act.

Diary of a Nobody Assembly anns. until 27Aug. 4.35pm. Rodney Bew'es plays the harmlessly pompous Mr l’ooter. Three stars last year from The List.

Diatribe of Love 000 xls‘s‘enthly‘ Rooms. until 27Aug. l/.55um. Alter last year's hit Berk-oil's Il'rmten. the pressure was bound to be on Linda Marlowe. But whereas in Ber/{riffs Il’mnen Marlowe was portraying a number ol lemale archetypes. here she examines one woman's inner psyche as she struggles to survive the death ol her marriage. Amidst the bang and clatter ol broken crockery. she erupts onto the stage with bile and venom in (iabriel (iarcia Marquel's only drama. This vigour soon disintegrates. however. to be overtaken by nostalgia. melancholy and resignation. presenting the lragility' that exists beneath the .surlace ol a detiant woman. Marlowe is good but not as jaw- droppingly good as she was in last year's show. This is perhaps down to the sometimes awkward poeticism ol (iarcia Marque/s prose. Frequently it smacks ol cliche and lalse sentimentality. belittling the ellorts ol an ordinarily exceptional actress. ((‘atherine Bromley')
